Dino Bday Banner

Does your little one love The Land Before Time or Jurassic Park? Make your future paleontologists their very own dinosaur themed birthday banner! Crochet party decorations are very sturdy and can be used again and again or passed on to other families to enjoy. ❤

Let’s get started!

Finished Measurements:

The letters are about 4 inches tall. The “Happy” banner with dino footprints is about 33 inches long. The “Birthday” banner is about 39 inches long.

Supply List:

Caron Simply Soft Pistachio – 1 skein (Color A)

Caron Simply Pumpkin – 1 skein (Color B)

(or any other worsted weight yarn)

Crochet Hook in size G-6, 4 mm

Stitches and Terminology:

ch = chain

st = stitch

sl st = slip stitch

sc = single crochet

dc = double crochet

dc inc = work two double crochet in the same st

Notes:

I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel so I used the wonderful alphabet designs from Moogly as a jumping off point and modified the patterns to do the spiky edging. You will need to have two tabs open: this page and the Moogly alphabet instructions.

I am referring to the green as “Color A” and the orange as “Color B” so it is easier to follow in case you decide on a different color scheme.

H Directions:
Make 1 in Color A and one in Color B
Follow the directions from the moogly blog until you finish row 10.
instead of row 11: ch 1, sk 1 st, *dc inc in the next st, ch 1, work 2 sc around the post of the last dc you made, sc in the next st. skip 2 st. Repeat from * 3 more times. Break yarn and weave in ends.


A directions:
Make 2 in Color B
Follow the directions from the moogly blog for row 1, skip row 2, follow the directions for row 3 through row 6*, don’t break yarn.
*you will have 6 remaining stitches in this row instead of 4
Row 7: sl st to the last stitch of the first row. ch 1, *sk 2 st, dc inc in the next st, ch 1, work 2 sc around the post of the last dc you made, sc in the next st. Repeat from * 3 times, then sc in each st down the other side of the A. Break yarn and use ends to sew the middle post of the A to the opposite side.


P directions:
Make 1 in Color A and 1 in Color B
Follow the directions from the moogly blog for row 1, skip row 2, follow the directions for row 3 through row 17, do not break yarn.
Row 18: sl st along the top of letter until you reach the top left corner, *sk 2 st, dc inc in the next st, ch 1, work 2 sc around the post of the last dc you made, sc in the next st. Repeat from * 3 times, break yarn and use ends to sew row 17 to the middle of row 3.


Y directions:
Make 2 in Color A
Follow the directions from the moogly blog through row 8.
Row 9: ch 1, sc 9, sc dec over the next 3 sts, skipping the middle st. sl st in the last 9 sts.
Row 10: sl st to the opposite side of the work, *sk 2 st, dc inc in the next st, ch 1, work 2 sc around the post of the last dc you made, sc in the next st. Repeat from * 3 times, break yarn and weave in ends.


B directions:
Make 1 in Color B
Follow the directions from the moogly blog for row 1, skip row 2, follow the directions for row 3 through row 20. Do not break yarn.
Row 21: Holding the letter upside down, sl st to the first st of row 3. Sl st again along the side of the first row to get to the corner. Ch 1, *sk 2 st, dc inc in the next st, ch 1, work 2 sc around the post of the last dc you made, sc in the next st. Repeat from * 3 times, break yarn and weave in ends.


I directions:
Make 1 in Color A
Follow the directions from the moogly blog for rows 1 and 2.
Row 3: Ch 1, *sk 2 st, dc inc in the next st, ch 1, work 2 sc around the post of the last dc you made, sc in the next st. Repeat from * 3 times, break yarn and weave in ends.


R directions:
Make 1 in Color B
Follow the directions from the moogly blog for row 1.
Row 2: Ch 1, *sk 2 st, dc inc in the next st, ch 1, work 2 sc around the post of the last dc you made, sc in the next st. Repeat from * 3 times. Do not turn.
Row 3: sl st to the side of row 2, sl st to the side of row 1, sl st to the first st of row 1, ch 1, working in the unused loops of the starting chain, sc across. (15)
Follow the directions from the moogly blog from row 4 to row 23.


T directions:
Make 1 in Color A
Follow the directions from the moogly blog for rows 1 and 2.
Row 3: Ch 1, *sk 2 st, dc inc in the next st, ch 1, work 2 sc around the post of the last dc you made, sc in the next st. Repeat from * 2 times. Do not turn.
Follow the directions from the moogly blog for rows 4 through 6.


D directions:
Make 1 in Color A
Follow the directions from the moogly blog for row 1.
Row 2: Ch 1, *sk 2 st, dc inc in the next st, ch 1, work 2 sc around the post of the last dc you made, sc in the next st. Repeat from * 3 times. Do not turn.
Row 3: sl st to the side of row 2, sl st to the side of row 1, sl st to the first st of row 1, ch 1, working in the unused loops of the starting chain, sc across. (15)
Follow the directions from the moogly blog for rows 4 through 22.


Dinosaur Footprints:
Make 2 in Color B
Round 1: Ch 3, dc 7 in the 3rd chain from the hook, turn. (8)
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in the same st, 2 dc in each of the rest of the sts, turn (16)
Round 3: Ch 3, dc in the same st, dc, *inc, dc, repeat from * to end, do not turn (24)
Row 4: ch 3, working along the top of the semicircle, evenly dc 11, turn. (12)
Row 5: ch 1, sk 2 sts, dc inc in the next st, ch 1, work 2 sc around the post of the last dc you made, sc in the next st, sc 4, leave the rest of the sts unworked, turn.
Row 6: ch 1, sc 4, turn.
Row 7: ch 1, sk 2 sts, dc inc in the next st, ch 1, work 2 sc around the post of the last dc you made, sc in the next st, sl st down the side of rows 6 and 5, sk the next 2 sts of row 5, dc inc in the next st, ch 1, work 2 sc around the post of the last dc you made, sc in the next st, break yarn and weave in ends.

Finishing:

Chain about 105 for the “Happy” banner with the dinosaur footprints. Use small pieces of yarn to tie the letters on to the chain, spacing them out to give them the length of about 15 chain sts each.

Chain about 120 for the “Birthday” banner. Use small pieces of yarn to tie the letters on to the chain, spacing them out to give them the length of about 15 chain sts each.
